Oculus Quest Pro Price, Release Date, Review & Specs: Facebook said at the time that it was working on a new VR headset codenamed Project Cambria when it renamed to Meta and ditched the Oculus brand. However, even before that revelation, Meta had hinted that a “Oculus Quest Pro” headgear was in the works.

ARE OCULUS QUEST PRO AND PROJECT CAMBRIA THE SAME THING?
Mark Zuckerberg conducted a podcast interview about VR in March 2021, in which he discussed a future Oculus Quest Pro headset. He explained how face and eye tracking will be used to create lifelike avatars with matching facial emotions. He also noted that the lenses for mixed-reality experiences needed to be upgraded in order to better mimic the environment outside the headset.
Similarly, Oculus CTO John Carmack stated in an April Twitter Spaces interview that some at Oculus thought they wanted to push the edge rather than refine the Quest 2 concept. “We need depth cameras, mixed reality sensors, eye tracking, and facial tracking,” according to that camp. As a result, they started working on a “Pro version” of the Quest that would have “every sensor in the kitchen sink.”
What is the significance of this? Because the little details regarding Project Cambria that were revealed during the Metaverse webcast (linked above at the appropriate moment) all centred on these features. “Your avatar will be able to create authentic eye contact and mimic your facial emotions in real time,” according to Angela Chang, Oculus Director of Products.

Chang also talked about how Meta’s new “high-resolution, colourful, mixed reality Passthrough” is better suited to “representing the physical environment in the headset with a feeling of depth and perspective.”
Project Cambria, according to Zuckerberg, “isn’t the next Quest,” which implies it isn’t Quest 3, which is set to launch in 2023. It will, however, be “compatible with Quest” and use Meta’s “most sophisticated technologies.” To us, that definitely sounds like a Quest Pro headset.

WHEN WILL THE META QUEST PRO / PROJECT CAMBRIA SHIP?
In terms of when the headset would be released in 2022, a previous Quest Pro leak stated the headset will be released in “Q2 2022,” which may mean anywhere between April and June. However, a Meta source stated it will be released in September 2022, while leaker Brad Lynch speculated that Meta would make the announcement during Connect 2022, which will most certainly be held in October.
According to the same source, Meta will follow up Cambria with a second high-end VR headgear called Funston, which will be released in late 2024. It would be marketed as a work headset, similar to Cambria.

WHAT WILL THE QUEST PRO COST?
In a video, YouTuber Bradley Lynch claimed(opens in new tab) that the “bill of materials for this gadget is over $800,” but that there are rumours of a “subsidy” that might make the device significantly more reasonable. Lynch has spoken with many supply chain experts regarding the headset.
Lynch’s assertion was then corroborated by the aforementioned Meta source, who said it would cost $799. However, Meta responded to the story by stating that the price will be “much more” than $799. Based on that remark, we anticipate Project Cambria’s price will reach $1,000, equal the Valve Index, if not exceeding it. Given that Meta intends to advertise the Quest Pro as a face-mounted laptop, it’s understandable that it would charge a premium for it.
WHAT’S NEW WITH THE QUEST PRO DESIGN VS. THE QUEST 2?
SadlyItsBradley, a YouTuber, recently disclosed a slew of details about Project Cambria, including its design and specifications. They generated renderings of the headset with 3D artist Marcus Kane(opens in new tab) based on real-life pictures provided to Lynch by someone with a Cambria developer kit.
Cambria will feature an Elite Strap with Battery-style strap with a tightening knob on the back and a built-in battery pack, according to these renderings and prior leaks from various sources. It will include a fake leather cover that reaches across the forehead for increased support instead of a foam face cover. It’ll be wifi, much like the Quest 2.
Unlike the Quest 2, which has a thick front, the Project Cambria resembles a pair of glasses with a considerably thinner front. The lenses’ “pancake optics,” which “fold light multiple times over” to provide for a smaller, lighter profile with “several optical layers,” are responsible for this. Those words, by the way, are taken straight from Meta, indicating that the leaked design corresponds to the official information.
Even with the Elite Strap built in, this means you’ll have a considerably lighter headset overall.
While the front of the Cambria is primarily solid, glossy black, it does include translucent sections that let the built-in cameras to peep through and observe your surroundings. The two bottom cameras, according to Lynch, generate a “Lua composite,” while the centre 16MP HD camera adds colour and resolution to the other cameras’ quicker visual data. When combined, they’ll provide a far superior passthrough experience than the Quest 2’s mediocre cameras.
Lynch also stated that the way IPD adjustment is handled would be improved, which was a flaw in the Quest 2. Cambria, like that headset, will feature sliding lenses that you will physically slide rather than utilising a knob. The updated headset, on the other hand, is “smooth all the way through” and is expected to have a higher maximum IPD due to the distinct screens.
In early October, future Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth showed off a “prototype” headset that looks a lot like the leaked Quest Pro and promised Cambria renderings, but with improved back head support and more sculpted lenses. However, it isn’t a perfect match because it lacks the prominent forehead cushioning.

QUEST PRO SPECS AND FEATURES
According to current reports, the Quest 2 Pro will include mini-LED lenses with 2160×2160 resolution per eye and a 90Hz refresh rate. It’s a significant advance from the Quest 2, which had a per-eye resolution of 18321920.
Lynch talked with two different individuals who used Project Cambria and concluded that the resolution, field of vision, and overall visual experience were all quite similar to the Quest 2. If you’re a typical Quest 2 player, the spec update isn’t expected to make much of a difference.
Lynch also stated in a recent video that Cambria will employ the same Snapdragon XR2 CPU as the Quest 2, but with better cooling to allow for faster clock rates. In comparison to the leap between Quest 1 and 2, you’re unlikely to notice a significant improvement in game performance.
In an interview, Zuckerberg stated that he intended to develop bespoke silicon for the Quest 3, however this isn’t the Quest 3. It’s understandable that Meta would make no significant adjustments to this headgear model.
WILL THE QUEST PRO HAVE REDESIGNED OCULUS TOUCH CONTROLLERS?
During a significant Quest Pro leak, we got a peek of mystery new controllers that didn’t include the Oculus Touch’s halo tracking ring. These controllers appear to have the same button layout as the existing controllers. They do, however, appear to contain inside-out cameras to aid tracking, as well as a pen at the bottom for writing or choosing items while in mid-air.
These controllers should function exactly as well for playing your existing Quest games while also allowing for new, Cambria-only experiences.
WHAT WILL MIXED-REALITY PASSTHROUGH LOOK LIKE?
Passthrough is supported by the Oculus Quest 2, albeit only in grainy black-and-white. The Oculus Quest Pro will have a full-color passthrough that allows you to see your surroundings clearly and allows virtual creations to mix in more naturally with your environment, making you forget you’re wearing a headset. In terms of accuracy, resolution, and colour, the passthrough video looks to be near to real life, albeit there is some blurring around the margins of text or real-world objects. Still, it’s a huge improvement over Quest 2 in terms of quality, allowing you to enjoy activities without losing “sight” of your surroundings or other individuals in the room.

WILL PROJECT CAMBRIA HAVE EXCLUSIVE GAMES AND APPS?
During the Metaverse event, Zuckerberg discussed “unlocking new mixed reality experiences” with Cambria, such as virtual workouts and working at a desk while wearing a headset, while Chang said they’re “beginning to work with developers to build experiences for Cambria right now.”
Through the Presence Platform for Oculus Quest, certain XR experiences are technically available on the Quest and Quest 2. Chess, fishing, and a “real-world” version of the famous VR game I Expect You to Die are just a few of the games we’ve seen. Others, on the other hand, will need Cambria’s full-color passthrough and enhanced hand tracking.

Because Meta planned Project Cambria to be a portable workstation, it’ll need to have good productivity applications to succeed, something the Quest 2 now lacks. Last year, it unveiled two-dimensional productivity Quest apps like Canva and Dropbox, but many of these are still unavailable. We’re waiting to see if it’ll gain complete Android app compatibility or if folks will have to work in the Oculus browser.
In terms of virtual reality content, the Oculus Quest Pro should deliver similar results to the Quest 2. All of the finest Oculus Quest 2 games should operate on the new headset, and no Project Cambria exclusives will be available for the Quest 2.
